Bob Hower

Bob Hower has been labeled "Mister Wrestling" in Mifflin County, but his attention to detail and interest in wrestling could have earned him that title statewide, as well. Bob served for many years as the Pennsylvania State Wrestling Coaches Association Historian. Bob compiled the 'Statistical History of PIAA State Tournaments' which was the first publication of its kind. It was based upon year-by-year results of all rounds of the PIAA State Tournament and included most photos of the champions. Published in 1973, it was updated yearly until he sold the rights. That book won first place in the Amateur Wrestling News' national publication contest in 1974. Hower served as Director of the Lewistown Holiday Tournament for 29 of the 41 years it existed. He became the District 6 Wrestling Historian in 1976-77 season and held that position until the 1994-95 season. He compiled many individual stats, records, and team histories, kept EVERY individual's W-L record who competed in the District 6 Tournament. Bob was named the District 6 Wrestling Man of the Year for 1978. Bob began broadcasting high school wrestling during the 1973-74 season and continues to this day to do so. As of 2012, he served as a broadcaster for 39 years, and has done more than 280 dual meets and countless District, Regional and State Tournaments over the radio. Bob wrote a wrestling column for the Lewistown Sentinel 1983-1995. From 1979 through 1995 he served as the unofficial state high school historian and statistician. His statistics and collection of old photos appeared in the state program during that time. In 1989, he was inducted into the PWCA Hall of Fame, the first Mifflin County resident to be so honored. Then in 1990 he was named Wrestling USA Man of the Year. Bob is also a 1994 District 6 Wrestling Hall of Fame inductee as a contributor.
