Brian Urquhart

Brian Urquhart has made significant contributions to the Massachusetts wrestling community as a wrestler, coach, official, and administrator. In all of these roles, Brian has maintained a high standard of integrity and class. His low-key style and composure under pressure are hallmarks of Brian's remarkable career. Brian first made an impact on the Massachusetts wrestling scene as a co-captain on Coach Homer Barr's New England collegiate championship team at UMass-Amherst.

Upon graduation from college, Brian joined Hall-of-Famer George Bossi, helping to establish a wrestling dynasty at Lowell High School. After a terrific run in Lowell, Brian became head coach at Methuen High School, where he built a powerhouse wrestling program. His high school coaching career culminated in an undefeated dual meet season in the highly competitive Merrimack Valley Conference (MVC), garnering the MVC championship and Coach-of-the-Year honors.

Brian subsequently moved on to the head coaching position at UMass-Lowell for several successful seasons before returning to Methuen as Director of Athletics. Retired from coaching, Brian immersed himself in the administration of high school athletics. In addition to his duties at Methuen High School, Brian served as board president of the MVC Athletic Directors and vice-chairman of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Wrestling Committee.

Throughout his long tenure as a coach and administrator, Brian continued to work as a wrestling official, both on and off the mat. He is a well-respected referee who has officiated high school and collegiate matches at the highest levels of competition in Massachusetts and New England. More recently, Brian has served as MIAA Wrestling Tournament Director, overseeing the Division One post-season tournament.

In recognition of his many contributions, Brian was named Massachusetts Athletic Director of the Year in 2005 and inducted into the Methuen High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2006. Brian's induction into the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to a man who has spent his entire adult life in service to the sport of wrestling.

Brian resides in North Andover with his wonderful wife Karen, who is Brian's best friend and soul mate, and a loving mother for their three sons, Brian, Brett, and Doug, and daughter-in-law Jeanette.
