Walter Sherman
Lifetime Service Walter Sherman spent his scholastic career at Northbrook High School in the northern suburbs of Illinois. He was a solid three-sport athlete, participating in football, basketball and baseball. Wrestling was not an option for Walter "” Northbrook High School did not have a program. Upon graduation from high school, Walter entered the U. S. Army. Following his hitch with the military, Walter enrolled at Northwestern University and proceeded to try out for the Wildcat wrestling team. Walter earned a spot on the squad and went on to earn two Varsity letters. With a growing desire to both teach and coach, Walter left Northwestern and enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College (now known as Northern Iowa University) in Cedar Falls, Iowa. While enrolled at Iowa State Teachers Walter was a member of both the football and the wrestling squads. 1950, the year Walter earned his degree from Iowa State Teachers, saw Iowa State Teachers win the NCAA Wrestling Championships. In 2009 Walter was inducted into the Northern Iowa Hall of Fame for having been a member of the 1950 National Championship Team. In 1950, with his degree and teaching credentials firmly in hand, Walter returned to Illinois and took a teaching position at Hinsdale High School. Walter also served as the school's Head Wrestling coach. After three seasons with Hinsdale, Walter took over the football and wrestling assignments at Glenbrook High School in Northbrook, Illinois. He coached football for ten seasons, winning seventy-five percent of his games. His squads posted two undefeated seasons. Walter's wrestling teams faired well also. His Glenbrook squads won four IHSA Regionals (then, Districts). In 1957 Glenbrook placed seventh in the IHSA State Finals followed by a third place showing in 1959. Overall, Walter coached seventeen placewinners, two of which were State Champions. Both of his sons placed in the IHSA State Finals: Dean and Dan were both State Runner-ups. Dan went on to become a National Champion for the University of Iowa. Walter started the Glenview Park District wrestling program and was the founder of the Glenbrook South Holiday Wrestling Tournament. As the Chairman of the Physical Education Department at Glenbrook South High School he developed a widely respected program that was featured in the 1970 American Journal of Health, Physical Education and Recreation as one of the outstanding Physical Education programs in the world.
