Mike Hart

Mike started wrestling at Mira Costa High School in 1959. He was coached by Jack Fernandez and placed third at California Interscholastic Federation Masters two times.

Mike went on to Brigham Young University from 1962-1967.

After wrestling for BYU, he moved to Santa Barbara and started the wrestling program in both the junior high and the high school.

In 1971, Mike was named as the first wrestling coach at Dos Pueblos High School, and within four years they won the CIF Masters in 1975. He was named 1975 Coach of the Year by the Southern California Wrestling Association, and he was twice Santa Barbara High School Coach of the Year.

His teams at Dos Pueblos went on to win three CIF championships while also finishing second twice and third once. They won 15 league championships, including 13 consecutive, and had a league dual meet record of 149-9 and a combined dual meet record of 268-21.

Mike coached two state champions and 10 state place-winners while also having nine CIF individual champions, 41 CIF placers and 107 individual league champions. His teams won 37 tournaments, including CIT, Mira Costa and Cupertino.

In 1986, he was a member of the CIF-Southern Section advisory board for wrestling. Mike also hosted and competed against two cultural exchange teams from Japan and another from Germany.

After stepping down as the head coach, Mike served as an assistant coach for Carson Wollert, Mike Yamasaki and Anthony Califano.

Mike served as an assistant coach to Mike retired from teaching in 2007 after 40 years in the Santa Barbara School District.

He still helps out Dos Pueblos HS wrestling with photography and running dual meets, tournaments and some practices.

He was inducted into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2008, and into the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Hall of Fame as a wrestling coach in 2001.
