Joe Gilas

Joe Gilas, Denver: Gilas graduated from Huerfano High School, now Walsenburg, obtained his BS from Colorado State University and his masters from Northern Colorado. He obtained an additional degree in Microbiology from the University of Colorado in 1964. He coached wrestling at Lyons High School for two seasons (1950-1952) then followed with a 30-year career at Adams City High School. His record at Adams City was 208-29-2 in his first 12 years at the school. He also coached football, tennis, swimming and track for the Eagles. His teams won 10 league championships and in 1966, he was the state's coach of the year. Individually, he had five state champs and 13 runner-ups at Adams City. Seven went on to become coaches. In 1993 the Adams City field house was named in his honor. He has served as a volunteer at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science for 25 years and in 2008, he was honored for his service at the Museum. He has also published books on wrestling in 1970 and 1978 and he was honored by the Colorado State Department of Education in 1982.
