F.D. "Red" Robertson
Born in Raysal, West Virginia in 1934, Franklin Delano “Red” Robertson graduated from Grundy High School in 1952 and from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1956 with a degree in mining engineering. From 1956 to 1964, Robertson worked for the Buchanan County Coal Corporation and then Thompson and Litton Coal Corporation where he became a part owner.
Robertson entered law school at the University of Virginia in 1964 and graduated in 1967. He practiced law in Grundy, concentrating his time and talents in the coal industry until 1979. Since 1980, Robertson has been the owner, director and officer with a number of coal companies.
He married the love of his life, Bobbie, in 1983 and the couple was blessed with four children: Shane, Tass, Brant and Spring Lee.
Shane, Tass and Brant developed an interest in wrestling at an early age and Bobbie began transporting them to Virginia Beach to attend wrestling camps. This inspired Red to form the Grundy Wrestling Club, an endeavor that has lasted for more than 25 years. The club gives youth in the Grundy feeder school system an opportunity to begin wrestling at a young age. No child is ever turned away or denied the privilege of going on a wrestling trip due to a lack of money. Children who are willing to practice and learn have an equal opportunity to compete in the sport and possibly earn a college scholarship as a result of their efforts.
The club's ability to hire good wrestling coaches enables them to teach college-level wrestling techniques. Some former wrestlers who chose not to continue their education after high school still return to the club to serve as volunteer coaches. They assist the younger members as they as they begin their quest to wrestle and succeed.
By all accounts, Red Robertson’s dream of building a successful wrestling program has been fulfilled!
