Admiral Richard Mies

Weighing in at a mighty 95 lbs. Lane Tech freshman Richard "Rick" Mies grappled his way to the City Public League Championship back in 1959; Rick would go on to medal in the City Public League Championships each of his four years at Lane. In his senior year he and his Lane Tech teammates were crowned the City Public League Dual Team Champions. Rick graduated from Lane Tech as Class Salutatorian and enrolled at Ohio State University. At OSU Rick earned his athletic sweater and numerals while on the Freshman Wrestling Team. In 1963 Rick enrolled at the United States Naval Academy. At Annapolis he was a member of the 1966 Eastern Intercollegiate Dual Meet Championship squad; in 1967, his senior year, he won the conference championship at 152 lbs. Following an outstanding and illustrious career while at Annapolis, Rick, in 1967, graduated from the Naval Academy with a mechanical engineering degree "” he was also first in both academic and lineal seniority in his class. The following year Rick spent as a graduate student at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. His experiences in the Navy are many. He has held both U.S. and Allied commands at senior military levels. Upon completion of his submarine training duty, Rick served on two nuclear attack submarines as well as a ballistic submarine before commanding the nuclear attack submarine, USS Sea Devil. Additionally he has been involved in: Nuclear Power Training; Reactor Control; Weapons; Nuclear Propulsion; Guided Missile School; Undersea Warfare, Submarines "” the list goes on. He is one of a few flag officers to complete qualification as both a submariner and a naval aviation observer. As his experiences grew, so did his rank. An Ensign upon graduation, he became Lieutenant, j.g. then Lieutenant to Lieutenant Commander. In 1980 he made Commander, Captain in 1987 and Rear Admiral by 1993. On August 1, 1998 Richard achieved the rank of Admiral in the United States Navy. Early in 2002, Admiral Mies retired from the service. During his years of service Rick had duty assignments with the U. S. Strategic Command; as Commander, Submarine Group Mediterranean; Commander, Submarine Force, Atlantic; and Commander in Chief, U. S. Strategic Command. Over the length of his outstanding career, Rick has earned numerous awards and commendations "” Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Distinguished Service Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal, National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, and the Navy Achievement Medal to name but a few. He also was awarded the Thompson Trophy for contributing the most to the promotion of athletics at the Naval Academy. In his retirement Rick serves as CEO and President of The Mies Group, LTD., as well as Chairman of the Department of Defense Threat Reduction Advisory Committee, Chairman of the Board of the Navy Mutual Aid Association, the naval Submarine League, a member of the Committee on International Security and Arms Control of the National Academy of Sciences, a member of the Board of Governors of Los Alamos National Laboratory and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory "” as well as serving on a plethora of advisory boards.
