Pat O'Connor

Lifetime Service Pat played football and wrestled for Joliet Catholic High School in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He attended Joliet Junior College where he continued his participation in both sports. He was a member of the Wolves 1963 National Championship Wrestling Team. Pat went on to wrestle for Western Illinois University where he graduated upon earning his teaching degree. Pat was instrumental in creating the wrestling program at Illini Bluffs High School in Glasford, Illinois in 1970 and has continued to run the wrestling program there for the past 37 years. He established the first kids club in central Illinois in 1974 and coached it for the next 22 years. His high school teams have won over 500 dual meets, fifteen IHSA Regional titles, six conference championships, two IHSA Sectional titles and have placed 5th (1981) and 3rd (1982) in the IHSA State Finals. Of Pat's 73 State Qualifiers, 28 have become place winners "” three as State Champion. Eight times Pat was selected as the Central Illinois Class A Coach of the Year; in 1982 the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association selected Pat as the Class A Coach of the Year. The Glasford Optimist Club named Pat as its Man of the Year in 1983. As a tribute to Pat's accomplishments, the IWCOA in 1994 inducted Pat into its prestigious Hall of Fame. In 2007 Pat was chosen as one of the Grand Marshals for the IHSA State Wrestling Finals. As a final note, Pat has had the good fortune to coach his three sons (Patrick, Shawn and Casey) "” and each one has earned a medal in the IHSA State Finals.
