Ed Luety
Lifetime Service Ed was a varsity starter for his four years at East Leyden High School where he was coached by Hall of Famer Charlie Farina. His junior year Ed was a State Qualifier; in his senior year he was selected as Team Captain. In 1969 Ed obtained his wrestling official's license from the IHSA; for the next 34 years Ed served as an IHSA wrestling official. As he gained additional experience his officiating career began to blossom. In his career of service to the IHSA Ed Luety would work 29 IHSA Regionals; 25 IHSA Sectionals; 18 IHSA State Individual Wrestling Championships; and 11 IHSA Dual Team State Finals. He is the only official to work four Class AA State Team Dual meet Championships. Ed was a member of a small yet significant committee that was instrumental in instituting training clinics for IHSA Wrestling Officials; these clinics are now an integral part of the formal IHSA licensing procedure. For the past ten years Ed has worked tirelessly as a Floor Official for the IHSA Individual State Championships. Ed's dedication and capability as an official has not gone unrecognized as the IWCOA has acknowledged his acumen on the mat by honoring Ed as Official of the Year on four different occasions "” the only IHSA wrestling official to be so honored. Additionally, in 1991, Ed was honored with the National High School Federation Official's Award. For his service to and his support of the sport of wrestling, the IWCOA declared Ed as its Man of the Year in 1989. Inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in 1991, Ed was further honored as a Grand Marshal for the IHSA Individual State Finals in 1998. As a capstone to his career the IWCOA awarded Ed its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. While currently retired as a mat official, Ed continues to serve the sport as a wrestling coach for Notre Dame of Niles as well as a valuable Floor Official at the IHSA State Finals.
