Randy Omvig
Randy and his wife, Ellen, have become advocates for our Veterans returning home from the war. They help them address their physical, emotional and psychological effects from their time in the service and as they return to civilian life. They began by writing Congressman Leonard Boswell and Senators Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley. They told them what had happened to their son Joshua and identified things they felt would help others. Some of the things included having appropriate decompression or defusing time for troops corning home. Programs and services that would address veterans' needs and an outreach program for them and their family to know the signs to look for and how to obtain help were also discussed. As a result of the Omvig's efforts, Congressman Boswell wrote and introduced in the House of Representatives the Veteran's Suicide Prevention Bill. Senators Harkin and Grassley introduced a companion bill in the Senate. Both Randy and Ellen spoke out and advocated for the passage of the legislation and they also testified before the Senate's Veterans Affairs Committee. The bill was passed unanimously in both houses of Congress and signed into law by President George Bush on November 5, 2007. They have also spoke to other groups including the Iowa National Guard Family readiness Convention, Iowa Veterans Service Officer Convention, Iowa NAMI Convention and the Veterans Health Administration Senior Management Conference each trying to help with awareness of Veteran Suicide Prevention.
