Dr. Royal Smith
Dr. Smith is a graduate of Denver South High School in 1950 and is being inducted in the Hall of Fame as an Outstanding American, one who was associated with wrestling, but also excelled in his chosen field. Dr. Smith attained his BA from the University of Colorado in 1954 and his medical degree from the University of Colorado Medical School in 1958. He went on to serve in the U.S. Navy from 1959 until 1964 where he attained the rank of Lt. Commander. He was a third-place finisher in the state wrestling tournament while wrestling for Denver South and was also an All-state football player for the Rebels. While wrestling at Colorado he was an NCAA national runner-up losing the title in 1954 to defending champion Ned Blass, 5-4, on riding time. He was named the Outstanding Senior Student/Athlete at CU in 1954. He was the Chief Radiologist at the Glenwood Springs Hospital from 1969-2004 and the Imaging Wing at the new Valley View Hospital is named in his honor.
