Alonzo Whitt

Alonzo Whitt, who is deaf, never wrestled in high school or college, but he is well known for his work and coaching at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind in Colorado Springs. He is receiving the Medal of Courage from the National Hall of Fame. Whitt became involved in wrestling when he arrived at Gallaudet University. He became a success at the sport right away in Freestyle and in the Deaf Olympics in Freestyle and GrecoRoman. He became the wrestling coach at D&B in 1970 and his teams went on to win 11 Black Forest League titles and five runner-up finishes. The Bulldogs also won five District titles, finished second three times and third twice. Ten of his teams placed among the top-10 at state, the best, fourth in 1977. He became the school's athletic director in 1991, but continued as an assistant coach until 1994. He retired that year to concentrate on his duties as AD. Over the years he has made numerous presentations and headed workshops to high school, city and state programs regarding deafness. He has been responsible for fundraising every four years to send athletes to the Deaf Olympics.
