Lindy Johnson
Lindy Johnson had the good fortune of wrestling for two Hall of Fame coaches. He wrestled for Kirby Symes at Ellsworth and then for Byron James at UW-River Falls. While at River Falls, Lindy was a two time NAIA All-American. He was eighth in the NAIA National Tournament in 1969 and second in 1970. He was also WSUC champion in 1970. In 1969 he was named to the NAIA All-District 14 team. After college, Lindy took a position as a teacher and coach at St. Croix Central High School, a position he still holds. From 1973-75, he coached wrestling at SCC. In 1988 his Panthers finished second in the state in Division III. The next year, his team was state champions. Five times in seven years (1987-1903) his teams won the conference title. He has also been the golf coach at SCC for many years. In 1989, Lindy was named District I Coach of the Year, a title that gave him the privilege of being the Wisconsin coach in the 1990 Minnesota/Wisconsin Classic. In 1993, Lindy was inducted into the UW-River Falls Athletic Hall of Fame. Lindy took over mid-season for retiring UWRF coach Byron James in 1998. For five years he struggled against great odds to keep the once proud UWRF program going but the university dropped the program in 2002. In addition to teaching and coaching, Lindy has always been actively involved in his community. He served a number of years on the Hammond Village Board and was also very active in the Hammond Lions Club, serving as president and being named Lion of the Year in 1990. He attended and taught catechism at Immaculate Conception Church in Hammond and in 1998, was named Grand Marshall for the Hammond Heartland Days celebration. Lindy and his wife Sue now live in River Falls. They have three grown children: Andy, an assistant wrestling coach at SCC; Matthew, who lives with his wife Kerry in Appleton; and Betsy, who lives with her husband Pete in River Falls.
