Dr. Robert Mason

Deceased Bob wrestled for the University of Wyoming where he was a three time letterman, two time conference champion and was the first ever NCAA place winner for the University of Wyoming where he placed 4th twice in 1950 and 1951. Bob had a championship team his second year coaching at Cheyenne High School. (Cheyenne's first wrestling championship) He also had several individuals that were state champions. He returned to Laramie, Wyoming, as assistant coach for one year at the University of Wyoming under Dr. Everett Lantz. His coaching record for Laramie High School from 1955 to 1960 included 2-1st, 2-2nd and 1-4th place state team finishes. He also had multiple individual state champions. From 196-1962 he was the wrestling coach at Sheridan Community College in Sheridan, Wyoming. In 1962 he moved to Moses Lake where he started the wrestling program and was the baseball coach at Big Bend Community College. While at BBCC he had multiple Northwest NJCAA National place winners. Bob coached and sponsored the high school cultural exchange team from the Columbia Basin to the Calgary Stampede. In 1969, he took the Washington team to Wyoming to complete in the USA Wrestling Junior World Tournament. Bob has officiated for 34 years at all levels: junior high, high school and college including Pac-8, Evergreen Conference, WAC Conference, NCAA Competitions and NJCAA National tournaments. He also officiated the Olympic Trials, National Federation events and once officiated a match on the flight deck of the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier while it was at sea. Bob is a member and past president of the NJCAA Wrestling Coaches Association, member of the AWCA Executive Committee for four years, organized the Washington Wrestling Federation, and was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1980, WIAA Wrestling Hall of Fame in three categories: Official (1985), Coach, (1996), and Contributor (1995). In 1989, the Emperor of Japan awarded Dr. Robert L. Mason "The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette" for his work with the Japanese Agricultural Training Program as their coordinator for over 30 years. This award is rarely given to a non-citizen of Japan.
