Andrew McNerney
Andy McNerney honed his dominant style of offensive wrestling while competing at Harvard in the early 1980's. After his competitive days came to an end, he channeled his passion for the sport to coaching, serving as a mentor and valued instructor for many college wrestlers.
Andy was born and raised in Shoreham-Wading River, New York, where he graduated high school in 1979. He entered Harvard University and majored in Physics. While competing for Harvard, Andy placed in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Tournament three times, earned first team All Ivy honors and won the World Games for the Deaf in 1981. He capped his undergraduate career by placing 4th in the NCAA Championships in 1983.
After college, Andy continued his wrestling and seemed to only get better. He won the Wilkes Tournament three times (where he was also named Outstanding Wrestler); he won the Olympics regional qualifying tournament; and he won the prestigious Midlands Championships in 1993, a mere ten years after earning his All-American nod in college. With his crab-ride, Andy revolutionized wrestling on top. He was a true scoring machine, often tallying 20 to 40 points per match in the days before technical falls.
After his competitive days were over, Andy continued in the sport by passing on his wealth of knowledge. He coached at Harvard, George Washington University and the University of Maryland. Over the years, Andy has taken special pride in coaching and mentoring dozens of college wrestlers, including a number of All-Americans and NCAA Champions. He was inducted into the Harvard Varsity Club Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003.
In recent years, Andy has contributed his time by serving as Treasurer of the LACE Foundation, which supports wrestlers' travel and training expenses. He has also contributed generously to the Friends of Harvard Wrestling. Currently, Andy serves as CFO at RCG LLC, a real estate development corporation, based in Somerville, Massachusetts. He and his wife Elizabeth are proud parents of three children, Emerson, Zoe and Rayne.
