Ed Carlin

Ed Carlin spent thirty-three years as the head coach of the wrestling program at Syracuse University.

During his tenure the Orangemen compiled an overall record of 275-184-7. The importance of the Syracuse program to wrestling in Upstate New York is hard to overestimate.

Ed began wrestling at Bainbridge High School with his brother, Bob, as a teammate. He wrestled for Bainbridge for four years, had only one dual meet loss and was rewarded with a wrestling scholarship to Syracuse where he became a four-year letterwinner. In his senior year, Ed was voted team captain. He was the Davidson co-winner as the Outstanding Wrestler in 1957 and 1958. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in 1958 and later returned to earn his master's in 1970.

After graduating in 1958, Ed taught physical education in a public school for three years while simultaneously serving as the SU freshman team wrestling coach under then varsity head coach Joe Scandura. Ed's 1960 team went undefeated and won the Eastern Championships.

In 1963, Ed was appointed the head coach. He also taught physical education at Syracuse from 1963 to 1975.

Syracuse did not provide wrestling scholarships during Ed's first decade as head coach, and the Orangemen's won-loss record during this time reflects the realities of competition at the Division I level. Nevertheless, Ed coached five All-Americans during this difficult period, including two national champions and three runner-ups. In 1974, wrestling scholarships returned, and Syracuse wrestling became a power. Ed's teams posted a winning record in 20 of his final 23 seasons.

During his career, Syracuse had 22 individuals earn All-American honors. Gene Mills was a two-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American who returned to SU as Ed's assistant coach after graduating. Two-time All-Americans included two-time NCAA champion Jim Nance, Dick Slutzky, John Janiak, Chris Catalfo, Wayne Catan, Rich Santana and Darren Schulman. Tom Schlendorf and Mark Kerr also won national titles.

Ed's teams produced 42 individual EIWA champions and five EIWA team championships. Over the last 15 years of Ed's coaching career, his teams finished in the top three at the EIWA 11 times.

Some of Ed's wrestlers have earned positions on U.S. Olympic teams, including Mills, who had the misfortune of being on the 1980 team that boycotted the Moscow Games. Ed served on the committee that organized and began the Empire State Games, and he subsequently spent two years as Chairman of the District III open wrestling for the Games.

In 1987 he was the co-organizer of the wrestling division of the Junior Olympics. He founded the S.U. Matmen's Club which raised much needed funds for the Syracuse program. He also started the first summer wrestling camp at S.U. in 1963.

Ed is an active member of the S.U. Varsity Club, the Fort Brewerton Historical Society, the Lions Club and Phi Epsilon Kappa of Central New York. He also serves as chairman of fund raising for an effort to construct a park in Brewerton. The Varsity Club has twice honored Ed with its Achievement Award, in 1991 and 1994. That organization also bestowed its highest honor upon him in 1991 when he was designated a Letter Winner of Distinction. Ed was named E.I.W.A. Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989.

He was inducted into the New York State College Coaches Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1988 he was honored by the YMCA with its Community Fitness Award for promotion of fitness in the community. In 1994 the National Wrestling Coaches Association presented him with its 25 -year Service Award. The S.U. Alumni Club of Western New York honored him with its Outstanding Service Award in 1997. He was inducted into the E.I.W.A. Hall of Fame in 2005.

Ed is the happy father of three daughters and one son: Christine, Maureen, Therese and Christopher. With his wife, Patricia, of 38 years, Ed spends his time at their home on Oneida Lake and in Florida and plays with, dotes upon and entertains their grandchildren as often as time and opportunity permits.

The New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, in recognition of his lifetime of service to wrestling, proudly welcomes Edward Carlin to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
