George Kalber
George Kalber has worked at just about every level in the sport of wrestling; teacher, coach, administrator, and journalist - since he graduated from the University of Northern Colorado. His efforts and honors are too numerous to list in this brief space, but let it be known he even found time to coach some football and golf. He was the head coach at Wasson HS from 1959-1975 and again from 1977-1978. During his tenure, the Thunderbirds won the state title in 1974, in which he was named a State and National Coach of the Year, and finished third in 1975. His career record at the school was 129-53-5, won five league titles, seven district crowns and was league runner-up three times. He coached four state high school champions, and 14 other top-four place winners. In 1978 he became the Director of Sports Operations at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. In 1982, he moved on to become the director of the U.S. Olympic Training facility at Lake Placid, NY. Kalber, who served in the Navy during World War II has traveled broadly overseas to perform his duties. He was an assistant advisor and director of Olympic Mission for the World University Games in Mexico City in 1980 and was an honored guest of the Taiwan Olympic Committee. He originated the first wrestling team at the Colorado School for the Deaf & Blind and was a counselor for the Myron Stratton Home for Boys in Colorado Springs. He was also the Publisher/Editor of Scholastic Wrestling News, the first national high school wrestling publication and assisted in establishing USA-Germany and USA-Japan wrestling exchange programs. George passed away quietly on March 27th, 2007. He was thrilled about being inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. This was an inspiration in his final days.
