David Smith (Smitty)

David “Smitty” Smith’s wrestling journey began in 1979 with the Comsewogue Youth Club. His introduction to the sport came when one of his father’s boating friends, who ran the youth program, remarked, “David never stops moving,” and suggested he give wrestling a try. From the moment he heard the first whistle, David knew he had found his home.

In 1980, David moved to Hauppauge, where his father had wrestled years earlier. He quickly became involved in the Hauppauge Youth Wrestling Program, where he met his lifelong friend, Bruce Link. Wrestling soon became much more than a sport. Under the guidance of National Wrestling Hall of Fame Coaches, Chris Messina and Jerry Goodfellow, David developed into a three-time All-League wrestler, two-time League champion, two-time League Most Outstanding Wrestler, and team captain as both a junior and senior. Known for leading by example, he earned the respect of his teammates through his work ethic, humility, and quiet determination. He credits longtime practice partner Tom Palmer with encouraging him to transfer to SUNY Cortland to pursue Athletic Training and Physical Education—a decision that would shape the rest of his life.

After graduating from SUNY Cortland, David returned home to Hauppauge High School, where he has spent more than three decades serving as both a Physical Education teacher and Head Athletic Trainer. Throughout his career, he has helped protect the health and safety of thousands of student-athletes and has responded to several life-threatening emergencies, saving lives through preparation, knowledge, and calm leadership.

Since 1996, David has volunteered as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Suffolk County Wrestling Team, dedicating countless hours to county practices, dual meets, tournaments, and the care and development of wrestlers throughout Suffolk County. He has also provided medical coverage at every New York State Wrestling Championship during that time. In recognition of his unwavering commitment, the Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association has selected him as its Service Person of the Year for 25 consecutive years. David has been fortunate to work alongside many exceptional professionals, including longtime friend and mentor Tony Marra and New York State tournament physician Dr. Anthony Donatelli. Their friendship, teamwork, and shared commitment to the health and safety of New York’s wrestlers have been among the most rewarding experiences of his career.

One of David’s greatest joys has been watching his wife, Cindy, and their children, Luke, Jadyn, Brycen, and Ryder, grow up surrounded by the sport of wrestling and the values of hard work, respect, perseverance, and service that it has instilled in their family. While wrestling has demanded evenings, weekends, holidays, and more than 30 winter vacations spent at the New York State Wrestling Championships, Cindy’s unwavering encouragement and the support of their family have made his lifelong commitment to the sport possible.

For David, wrestling has never been defined by wins and losses. It has been a source of lifelong friendships, extraordinary mentors, unforgettable experiences, and an opportunity to serve others. Being inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is a deeply humbling honor and a reflection of the many coaches, teammates, colleagues, athletes, friends, and family members who have shaped his journey. The whistle that first captured the attention of a young boy in 1979 has never truly stopped echoing. It has guided a lifetime devoted not only to the sport of wrestling, but to the people who make it special. David hopes he has honored their investment in him by dedicating his life to giving back to the sport that has given him so much.
