William Patton (Billy)

For nearly five decades, William "Billy" Patton has embodied the very best of wrestling through his dedication, integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to excellence. As an accomplished athlete, respected coach, elite official, mentor, community volunteer, and leader, Billy has left a lasting impact on wrestling throughout Staten Island, New York City, and New York State.

Billy's wrestling journey began at Tottenville High School, where he quickly established himself as one of Staten Island's outstanding student-athletes. A standout in both football and wrestling, he earned varsity honors as a freshman and served as captain of the wrestling team during his junior and senior years. His achievements included being named a Staten Island Advance All-Star, winning back-to-back New York City Wrestling Championships at 148 pounds, and receiving the prestigious Iron Horse Award as Tottenville High School's Outstanding Athlete. He continued his wrestling career at Hunter College, where he again served as team captain, demonstrating the leadership qualities that would define his life.

After his competitive career, Billy remained committed to the sport by coaching wrestling at St. Peter's Boys High School from 1990 to 1994. His passion for developing young athletes naturally led him into officiating, where he built one of the most distinguished careers in New York City wrestling history.

Since becoming an official in 1992, Billy has earned the respect of wrestlers, coaches, and fellow officials across New York State. In 2008, he became the first New York City wrestling official selected to officiate at the NYSPHSAA State Wrestling Championships. During his career, he worked six NYSPHSAA State Tournaments—the highest level of state tournament participation by any New York City wrestling official. His résumé also includes multiple assignments at the prestigious Grapple at the Garden at Madison Square Garden, fifteen PSAL Wrestling Team Championships, and more than two decades officiating the PSAL State Qualifier Tournament.

Billy's influence extends far beyond the mat. Since 2012, he has proudly served as President of the New York City Wrestling Officials Association, dedicating himself to recruiting, educating, mentoring, and developing the next generation of officials. Through instructional classes, evaluations, and personal mentorship, he has helped raise the standard of officiating, while also ensuring a strong future for wrestling throughout New York City and New York State.

Away from wrestling, Billy enjoyed an equally distinguished career in public service. He proudly served with the New York City Department of Correction, retiring with the rank of Captain after a career marked by professionalism, integrity, and leadership. Following his retirement, he spent eighteen years in executive protection, serving businessman and philanthropist Ronald Perelman, where his discretion, dependability, and leadership earned tremendous trust and respect.

Billy's commitment to service also extends into the community. He has generously volunteered with Pinning for Autism, helping to raise awareness and support for individuals and families affected by autism through the sport of wrestling. Whether mentoring young athletes, assisting with events, or giving back to causes close to his heart, Billy has always believed in using wrestling to strengthen communities and improve lives.

Throughout every chapter of his life—as an athlete, coach, official, mentor, public servant, security professional, and volunteer—Billy has earned admiration not only for what he accomplished, but for how he accomplished it. His fairness, humility, professionalism, and character have made him a respected role model for generations of wrestlers and officials.

Despite his many accomplishments, Billy considers his greatest achievement to be his family. He is a devoted husband to his wife, Laura, and he is a proud father to Dan, Billy, and Gary. Today, he cherishes one of life's greatest blessings—being a grandfather to Olivia, Sophia, and Leo, while eagerly awaiting the arrival of another grandchild. Whether spending time at his shore home, relaxing on his boat, or simply enjoying family gatherings, these moments bring him his greatest joy.

William "Billy" Patton's legacy is measured not only by championships won, matches officiated, or titles held, but by the countless lives he has influenced through leadership, mentorship, service, and unwavering integrity. His lifelong dedication has elevated the sport of wrestling and inspired generations to pursue excellence both on and off the mat.

For his extraordinary accomplishments, distinguished career, selfless service, and lifelong dedication to wrestling, the Downstate New York Wrestling Hall of Fame proudly welcomes William "Billy" Patton into its distinguished membership. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations and serve as a lasting reminder that true greatness is measured not only by achievements, but by the lives we touch and the example we leave behind.
