Bruce Moe
Bruce Moe, son of Garland and JoAnn Moe, was born and raised on a farm near Caledonia along with four brothers and one sister. Leo Simon stopped in at Garland and JoAnn’s house to let them know he would like to have Greg (junior) and Bruce (freshman) give wrestling a try. After a short conversation, Leo said goodbye, and Garland told Greg and Bruce that they were both going out for wrestling, and practice started on Monday.
It took Bruce a while to catch on to the sport, but he kept working at it and finished 3rd at State as a Senior. He continued his wrestling career at Rochester Junior College under John Philo and had two outstanding years before transferring to Winona State and wrestling under Tom Eitter. Bruce continued to improve and excel, taking 3rd in the Division II National Tournament as a senior. Moe defeated some outstanding wrestlers throughout his college career and felt he had some unfinished wrestling business to take care of. After graduating from Winona State with a Physical Education degree, Bruce enrolled at NDSU and began working on his Master’s Degree while serving as a grad assistant to Bucky Maughan. Bruce continued wrestling and gravitated towards Greco, placing a couple of times in the Greco-Roman National Tournament.
Bruce finished his Master’s degree at NDSU and was subsequently hired to coach wrestling at the University of North Dakota. After four years, the wrestling program at UND was suddenly and inexplicably dropped along with a number of outstanding wrestling programs in the Midwest. Bruce had been working construction on the side and expanded the company, but continued wrestling every chance he got.
Bruce has recently retired from the construction business, but he is still wrestling, and wrestling well. He enjoys working out at NDSU and staying in shape for Greco-Roman wrestling tournaments. Moe has been wrestling competitively for over 50 years and has won many National Tournaments, along with 11 World Titles in Freestyle and Greco. Bruce is now 68 years old and has moved up to the 66-75 year-old age group. The number of wrestlers has dwindled a bit, but the wrestlers who are still competing are very skilled. Bruce recently won World Titles in both Greco and Freestyle in Poland and is looking forward to wrestling this coming year in South Africa. In addition to competing in this great sport, it gives Bruce and his wife, Kit, and chance to see the world.
Bruce still enjoys wrestling both Freestyle and Greco, and figures he will keep going until his body starts falling apart. It is not only amazing that Bruce is still wrestling, but still competing favorably against high-level competition on the world stage. There is an old saying that we tell ourselves as we start to decline mentally and physically with age. “We are not getting older, we are getting better.” Bruce Moe is one of the few people on this earth that actually epitomizes that phrase.
