Drew Black

In November 2024, Drew began his 27th year as the head coach at Wesleyan University and an associate professor of physical education.

A two-time New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Coach of the year, Drew has the most wins (240) of any wrestling coach in school history. Wesleyan won the NEWA championship in 2012 and finished the season ranked No. 11 nationally in Division III.

Under Drew, Wesleyan has qualified wrestlers for the NCAA Division III national championships in 14 of the last 18 years. The Cardinals have had five All-American wrestlers under Drew, including four since 2018 - Devon Carrillo, Isaiah Bellamy, Marco Gaita and C.J. Shea.

The team has earned team scholar All-America status for 23 consecutive years. The team also has 38 Scholar All-Americans receiving the prestigious award a total of 58 times in Black's coaching tenure.

In January 2020, Drew was inducted in the NEWA Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Drew was the head wrestling coach at Phoenix College (Ariz.) for three seasons (1995-98). In 1998, Phoenix College finished No. 6 in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCCA) final rankings and 11-3 overall. One of his wrestlers won a national title, while another finished third.

A 1992 graduate of Syracuse University, who went on to earn his Master's degree at Kent State University in 1994, Drew was a four-year varsity letter winner for Syracuse and was a team co-captain as a senior. He was a two-time runner-up at the N.Y. state collegiate wrestling championships, a seventh-place finisher at the 1991 Midlands Tournament and a fifth-place finisher in the EIWA Tournament in 1992.

Prior to enrolling at Syracuse, Drew was a 1987 state champion at 108 pounds while a senior at Mahwah (N.J.) High School.

Drew and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Cheshire and have two children, Sean and Leah.
