Joe Sellers

November 06, 1945 - Present

Joe Sellers, a wrestler, coach, pioneer, and mentor, has profoundly shaped the wrestling community in Northern Nevada. A 1963 graduate of East Bakersfield High School, Sellers excelled as an athlete, contributing to his team’s San Joaquin Valley Championship and finishing as the individual runner-up his senior year. Mentored by renowned coaches Leon Tedder and Grover Raines, he carried his passion for wrestling into a lifetime of coaching and leadership.

Sellers began coaching in the Reno area in 1969, serving as an assistant at Wooster High School and Hug High School before becoming Wooster’s head coach from 1972 to 1976. During his tenure, he coached Wooster’s first State Champion and produced three State Champions overall. Among his notable wrestlers was Nevada Wrestling Hall of Famer Dave Nevin, who credits Sellers with inspiring him to pursue a career in officiating.

In 1980, Sellers founded the first youth wrestling team in Northern Nevada, South Reno Wrestling, which he directed and coached for 19 years. His leadership helped establish the Nevada Youth State Tournament and promoted Olympic wrestling styles statewide. South Reno Wrestling produced numerous champions, including Jake Sellers, Nevada’s first four-time State Champion in upper weight classes, and several All-American athletes.

Sellers’ influence extended beyond coaching. He played a critical role in reviving Washoe County middle school wrestling in the late 1980s, co-developed the prestigious Reno Tournament of Champions, and helped organize the Sierra Wrestling Association.

A devoted family man, Sellers coached his four sons, who collectively won seven Nevada State titles and contributed to three team championships. Today, his legacy continues as several South Reno alumni have become coaches, and his seven grandsons carry on the wrestling tradition. Joe Sellers remains an avid supporter of the sport and a revered figure in the wrestling community.
