Known as “Mr. East Brunswick”, Doyle was influential in the growth and development of wrestling throughout the Garden State.

A Korean War veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps, Doyle was instrumental in the East Brunswick community as Recreation Director of the township for all programs, including youth wrestling from 1957-58.

The Rutgers University graduate began his teaching career in physical education at East Brunswick High School. He was the school’s first-ever head football coach and the first head wrestling coach. He also coached boys’ basketball at EB and football at Rutgers University. Doyle would later become the school’s athletic director from 1960-1972.

Doyle led the wrestling program for 12 years before his untimely death in 1972. He was 41.

His teams went 100-47-1 over his tenure, capturing two Middlesex County titles and two district championships along with nine runner-up finishes. He also coached three NJSIAA individual state champions: Richie Aiello (141, 1965), Max Guidoboni (115, 1965) and Lenny Cassidy (130, 1966).

Doyle founded the Middlesex County Wrestling Tournament in 1960, known today as the Greater Middlesex County Tournament, which is the second longest independent wrestling tournament in the Garden State. He also developed the Middlesex County Novice Wrestling Tournament for non-varsity wrestlers.

Doyle made even more contributions off the mat as the President of the New Jersey Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association as well as the Middlesex County Wrestling Coaches Association.

He was inducted into the East Brunswick Hall of Fame while the school’s athletic field and the Most Valuable Wrestler Trophy for the Middlesex County Wrestling Championships are named after Doyle.

Doyle and his late wife Joan had four children: Susan, Michael, Kathleen and James.
