Raymond Webb

When describing Raymond Webb, Grundy Wrestling Club President Tass Robertson says that "He is truly the heart and soul of Grundy wrestling!”

Webb made his entrance as a member of one of the Golden Wave's first AA state team champions and won Virginia state championships at 126 pounds in 1987 and 1988. Three decades later, his son Andy was a three-time Virginia state champion, capturing A titles at 106 pounds, 113 pounds and 120 pounds from 2015 to 2017, and giving the Webbs a rare father-son achievement. Raymond has coached 143 of the 149 state champions that Grundy has produced.

After high school graduation, the standard four-year college opportunity and the next level of wrestling beckoned. Webb, however, had other ideas and began a deeply satisfying career in law enforcement which offered many opportunities to help those who needed it. As a narcotics investigator, he was there to provide counsel and correction when neighbors couldn't conquer their demons

Webb was involved in two heroic and life-saving moments, each earning him the Valor Award from the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office. In 2011, he rescued fellow officers from an active shooter by guiding his wounded comrades out of danger while bullets slammed into the car he was using for cover. And then there was the flood of 2021 when Webb rescued a woman from her home after it had been swept off its moorings by flood waters and came to rest on a bridge abutment. After leading the woman to safety, he returned to the home and rescued her dog.

His career did not drive him away from family and wrestling. Webb and his wife Melissa raised their children Brynn, Ember, Andy, Loni, and Lori. And, with Melissa's support, he has been a faithful assistant coach for 35 years.

Webb's nomination was full of testaments to how kind and patient he was while working to make wrestlers better while also organizing tournaments and camps and providing wisdom, if needed. He also was known to take kids hunting or fishing when they were unfocused, confused or miserable.

Robertson says that "Nobody works harder, nobody is more resolute, nobody is as committed to doing what is best for kids, parents, and the community as Raymond Webb.”

The Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame presents Webb with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award for his remarkable contributions to Grundy’s storied program and the larger community of Buchanan County.
