Robert DeBerry
Robert DeBerry grew up in Tuscan where he wrestled and graduated for Tuscan High School before attending Pima Community College and the University of Arizona.
His name is synonymous with teaching high-level wrestling techniques to all of Arizona’s top-level athlete’s.
His famous coaching career brought national championships to Eric Larkin, the Gallick brothers, and his two sons Kory and Kyle, at Sunnyside High School.
His glorious coaching career started as an assistant coach at Pima Community College from 1983-85. He became an assistant coach at Canyon Del Oro High School in 1985 and became the head coach in 1986. DeBerry became an assistant coach for Richard Sanchez at Sunnyside in 1992, taking over as the head coach in 1993 and remaining there until 2011.
DeBerry built a dynasty at Sunnyside with 15 state championship teams and more than 70 individual state champions. He also had two runner-up team finishes and 20 region team championships.
He was named National High School Coach of the Year in 2006.
DeBerry continues to coach at his alma mater Tuscan.
For his legendary coaching career which is admired around the country and for being the most successful coach in Arizona wrestling history, the Arizona Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is proud to present Robert DeBerry with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award.
