Steve Ley

This introduction is a culmination of the reflections of Steve Ley's three children who have been actively involved in their Dad's wrestling career at one point or another. Steve coached both of his sons, Mason and Skylar, throughout their competitive wrestling careers; and his daughter, Addison, was the team's “stat girl.” Coincidentally, they were all positioned in age and corresponding involvement to be able to present their father with his 300, 400, and 500 career win awards, thanks to the oversight and direction of his co-coach and best friend, Bob Suranye. In fact, Steve's children respectfully call Coach Suranye their “Uncle Bob.” This unique alignment and friendship showcases the deep connection between Steve's family, his wrestling family, and his wrestling legacy and serves as a testament to the power of “family” in shaping a successful career.

Steve's journey with wrestling began on a rural dairy/hog farm in Shepherd, Michigan, where he grew up wrestling 200+ pound cattle and pigs. This unconventional start to his wrestling career carried over into his high school and college years, where he competed with passion and determination. Wrestling, however, was not just about personal accomplishments for Steve. The sport laid the foundation for his passion for helping others, particularly for young people in need of guidance and support.

As a wrestling coach for over 35 years at Caro Community School and 55+ years in other capacities, Steve has undoubtedly had a profound impact on the lives of countless young men and women. Through his leadership, Caro High School Wrestling achieved remarkable success, including 23 conference championships, 28 district championships, 8 regional championships, 2 state runner-up titles, and a state championship. But beyond the accolades, what truly sets Steve apart is his dedication to nurturing and mentoring the next generation.

No one embodies the "Eye of the Tiger" quite like Coach Ley. This is best shown through his legendary "do it!" chant, which could be heard echoing throughout the gym at wrestling meets. Steve was also renowned for his iconic mustache, a look that countless wrestlers have attempted to recreate over the years, all of which, without success. Steve's unwavering presence and support were felt in every match and every moment, ensuring that he was there for his wrestlers not just on the mat, but throughout their lives.

Coach Ley has coached 4 generations of successful student athletes, and he has always been an educator first and a wrestling coach second. He pushed his wrestlers to be great in whatever they did, whether that was wrestling or something else. Wrestling was just the vehicle he used to help inspire greatness in others. He wanted his wrestlers to train their minds just as much as they trained their bodies. The first practice of every season, he would NOT start it in the practice room, but rather in the classroom behind a desk working with the wrestlers on team and individual goals. Over the years, he shaped a culture of having fun while working hard, learning from your mistakes, and of course, ending every practice with the team motto, “family, focus, team.”
