David Carlile

LIFETIME SERVICE TO WRESTLING

1979-2013 Battleground High School  

 

David Carlile grew up in Battleground and wrestled for Battleground High School where he graduated in 1975. As a high school wrestler, he was 29-1 won/loss record in league. David was a three-time Clark County Champion, three-time district champion, two-time regional champion and participated in the state tournament three times. Carlile went on to attend Washington State University graduating in 1979. David returned to Battleground High School to begin his teaching and coaching career. He coached wrestling for the Tigers for the next 35 years serving as the head coach the last 29 years. His coaching record stands at 236-48-3 and includes the 2006 4A State Championship team. 


Carlile’s teams had great success on the mat. His teams finished in the top 10 at state 10 times. He coached 56 state placers, including 18 high school state champions. Eight of his wrestlers earned high school All-American honors and three became national champions.  David is proud to say that over the past 50 years there has been a Carlile involved in the Battleground High School wrestling program either as a wrestler, coach, or manager. 


Coach Carlile has dedicated his career to inspiring young people to push the limit, to achieve their goals in life, in the classroom, as well as on the wrestling mat. He has been an integral part of many freestyle and Greco tournaments including the Tom Shaw Memorial Jr. National Qualifier and Olympic Team Trials Qualifier. Throughout the years he has had numerous Olympian’s in the wrestling room. Beyond wrestling David has also coached the Battleground High School Cross Country team and spent many seasons coaching powerlifting and football.


Honors have been numerous for Carlile both on the mat and in the classroom. In 1994 Coach Carlile was selected as the Regional Coach of the Year. In 2006 David was awarded the Educator of the Year for Battleground High School.  In 2008 David was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame


Retiring from education in 2015, Carlile is now a Tree Farm owner and Timber Manager Specialist for the St. Helens View Tree Farm. David and his wife Pam currently reside in Amboy, Washington. They are the proud parents of two adult children, Jessica (34) and Janel (29), who were both 4-year Battleground High School wrestling managers/statisticians. The Carlile’s are also proud grandparents to Jude, Eva and Wilder Thomas.
