Michael Flemming, Jr.

Mike Flemming’s wrestling background has enabled him to teach excellent technique and raise the level of all his athletes whether novices or longtime varsity wrestlers. Mike started wrestling in Philadelphia in a strong program at Germantown Academy. He also wrestled for National Wrestling Hall of Famer, Sam Case, at Western Maryland College. His experience there and his love of Maryland resulted in his acceptance of a position immediately after college graduation at Liberty High School. Mike took on a challenging schedule, teaching English and being wrestling coaching assistant. Three years later, he started a seventeen year run as the Head Varsity Coach. His Liberty High School record includes an outstanding 254 wins.

In 2015, Mike transferred to Westminster High School also in Carroll County. He continues to lead Westminster Wrestling today. Being active in the Mat Rats Junior League in Westminster and living in the community made for a perfect match. Mike’s teams tallied another 103 wins under his tutelage. Along the way, he has produced 31 County Champions, 12 Regional Champions and qualified 64 wrestlers for the State Tournament. Twelve of Mike’s wrestlers became State Finalists and five were State Champions.

Mike’s coaching outside of high school and his administrative work are also of note. He was an assistant coach for the Maryland Junior and Cadet National Team for two years, requiring many hours of work and a huge chunk of time over the summer. Besides coaching the juniors locally in Westminster, he is on the Board of Directors. The administrative work that he does often gets unnoticed but it’s paramount to the success of the program. USA Wrestling, Maryland State Wrestling Association and the Maryland Junior League are all grateful for Mike’s work outside the wrestling room. Mike lives with his wife, Melanie, and has four children; Samantha, Chandler, Stevie and Michael III.
