Steve Foster

Steve Foster is recognized for his years of dedication as a coach, to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of wrestling. Coached 38 years - Dual meet record: 306-64 Foster graduated from Trinidad State Junior College in 1957. He then transferred to the University of Colorado where he obtained his degree in physical education in 1962 and his masters in physical education in 1965. He began his career teaching at Holly Ridge and Holly Hills elementary schools in 1963 to 1969. During that time, he was also an assistant wrestling coach at Cherry Creek high school. He was hired as the head coach at Cherry Creek in 1969, a position he held until 2001. He retired from teaching in 1997, but continued as the school's coach. During his tenure, Foster's teams won the Centennial League title 21 times, finished second six times and in 1991 won the state championship. His teams also won 18 District/Regional titles and finished second 10 times. The Bruins placed second in the state tournament five times, third six, and in the top 10, 21 times. He produced 68 state place winners, including 28 individual champions, five high school All-Americans, five eventual college All-Americans and one Greco Roman national champion. He coached in the All-State Games in 1994 and received the Level Four Ring (highest achievement) in high school coaching in Colorado.Foster was the Colorado Coach of the Year in 1991 and 1994 and a finalist for the National Coach of the Year in 1999. He was inducted into the Colorado Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002. He did not officiate high school, but was an official for Freestyle and Greco Roman meets.Foster created the State Camp Champ super camps program, has taken several teams to state and national summer camps and tournaments. He developed the Little Brothers age group program and has served as a regional representative for the Colorado Wrestling Coaches Association. Steve Foster has given a lifetime of service to the youth of Colorado through his dedication to the spoil of wrestling as a coach, mentor, official and role model.
