Lester Mattocks

Mattocks, a graduate of Abraham Lincoln and Northern Colorado began coaching in 1967 as an assistant at Platte Valley in Kersey. And, it is interesting to note, he did not wrestle in college. He became the head coach at Denver South (1970-1975) then assisted Hall of Fame coach Joe Klune at Lincoln (1976-1980). In 1981 he took over the coaching reins at his alma mater. Mattocks, who compiled a career dual match record of 169-65-1 into this season, thought he had resigned from his coaching and teaching career with the Lancers in 2004. But he was asked by the school's administration to return to coaching following circumstances in the wrestling program, which were not under his control last year. While at Lincoln, Mattocks won five DPL championships, was league runner-up eight times and won nine District championships. He was named the DPL Coach of the Year three times (1986, 2001 and 2002). He served as president of the Colorado Wrestling Coaches Association from 1999-2001, coached in the All-state Games in 2000 and 2004, and was selected as the Colorado Wrestling Man of the Year in 2000. A total of 83 of his wrestlers have qualified for the state tournaments.
