Paul Rusko
Paul Rusko's contribution to wrestling has been as a wrestler, coach, and official, wrestling rules interpreter and administrator for over 35 years.
His impact on the sport is noteworthy, but it was his service to the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association that played an important and vital role in the development of Maryland Interscholastic Wrestling. While on the National Wrestling Rules Committee a medically approved weight certification was approved. This very important action was needed for years.
In 1959, Coach Rusko founded the Severna Park High School wrestling program. He also hosted and directed the inaugural Anne Arundel County wrestling Tournament at Severna Park High School in 1960, the first county public school wrestling tournament in the state of Maryland
Paul attended Springfield College in 1961-62, where he coached the freshman wrestling team and worked as a graduate assistant for head coach Doug Parker. Paul also officiated high school wrestling matches during that time. His master's thesis was a study to determine the status of wrestling in physical education curriculum that Springfield graduates received during the years of 1953-1959. This information was used to provide more adequate preparation for physical education teachers.
In 1964 he was appointed the wrestling rules interpreter for Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association, a position he held for 15 years.
From l970-1991 Paul was chairman of the MPSSAA Wrestling Committee. This committee established the first public school state championship in 1970.
Paul also served six years on the National Federation of High School Wrestling Rules Committee.
In 1975, Paul Rusko, Frank N. Treuchet and Adam Zetts became the first class inducted into the MPSSAA Wrestling Hall of Fame.
For Paul's tremendous contribution to the sport of wrestling he is presented with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award by the Maryland Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
