Joe is well known and admired for working with youngsters who were not the best citizens or scholars in his school. Using wrestling to instill a sense of discipline, Joe was able to help many youngsters develop into productive citizens. At least three of his State Champions were accepted, wrestled and graduated from Ivy League universities. Joe Gicobbe's teams and wrestlers were always competitive but beyond his career records is the fact that Joe remained devoted to his tough Miami wrestlers mentoring them in more than wrestling techniques.
