Duffy Brelsford
Duffy Brelsford was a 1962 graduate of Milwaukee Pulaski High School. He played a valuable role in the Pulaski's 1961 State Championship team as he placed second at 165 lbs. Upon graduation from high school he enrolled at the University of Illinois. Duffy earned his B.S. in 1967 and his M.S. in 1968 both from the University of Northern Colorado. Duffy's collegiate wrestling career was cut short due to a series of knee injuries. Upon graduation from Northern, Duffy found himself in California at Miraleste High School from 1968-1973. Duffy started the program at Miraleste, and coached 2 Division 1 All-Americans one of whom, Steve Barrett was a National Champion for Oklahoma State. In 1973 his high school team captured the Southern California State Championship. Duffy also earned individual honors as well as being named Southern California "Coach of the Year" in 1973. Duffy's return to Wisconsin found him at Brown Deer High School. Brelsford's stint at Brown Deer lasted from 173-1976, at which time he moved to Port Washington High School. The Port Washington wrestling program has a rich wrestling tradition and Duffy has done nothing but enhance that tradition. Under his tutelage, Port Washington has dominated the North Shore Conference. His teams have won 7 conference championships, in both the North Shore and Braveland Conferences, and have compiled a 130-67 dual meet record while wrestling some of the best competition in the state. In 1984 Port Washington captured the State Championship bringing Duffy the unique distinction of winning a state championship in two different states. For the record, Duffy owns a 201-118 dual meet record in his coaching career. He has coached five wrestlers to the WIAA State Finals, with 2 of them Joe Sigler (1984) and Dan Schumacher (1989) winning state championships. In addition, Duffy has coached 7 other state place winners. But what the record does not show is the countless hours that Duffy has spent running and officiating tournaments, both folkstyle and freestyle. He has given much back to the sport including serving since 1985 as the Wisconsin Junior Director. Duffy has also served on the Executive Committee of the WWCA.
