Milt Sherman

September 27, 1951 - Present

An outstanding coach for 30 years in the Greenville area, Milt Sherman built D.H. Conley High School's wrestling program into a powerful force in North Carolina wrestling.

His teams compiled a dual record of 470-114-5 during his tenure, second all-time in North Carolina coaching wins at the time of his retirement.

Sherman coached 43 All-State wrestlers, including 14 state champions. He coached five high school All-Americans, including James Johnson who went on to win three national championships and coach the 2012 Olympic team.

Sherman's D.H. Conley team won the 3A State Championship in 1995, earning him the 3A Coach of the Year award. Sherman's teams finished as state runner-up in 1977, 1989, and 1990. Sherman's teams also claimed 10 regional championships and 16 conference titles.

Coach Sherman was on the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Wrestling Advisory Committee from 1985-89, was was vice chairman for the North Carolina Coaches Association Wrestling Committee from 1989-98. He has served on the board of directors for the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's North Carolina chapter since 2006.

His master's thesis Traditional Wrestling Styles was published by University of Oregon Publications.

He has authored more than two dozen articles for Coach and other athletic magazines and wrote the young adult novel Wrestling Spoken Here.

Sherman was inducted into the East Carolina University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, North Carolina chapter in 2005, and the Arlington (Virginia) Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.
