A.A. Keith

This great American started his competitive career as a wrestler! In 1945 and 1946 he wrestled for Rochester High School. As a senior he finished third at the Minnesota State High School Wrestling Tournament. In high school he also participated in football and baseball. He received the Blakely Cup which was based on scholarship, character and athletic ability. In 1946 he attended Amherst College in Amherst, Massachusetts and was on the wrestling team for four years. As a junior he was undefeated and New England Champion. He was undefeated until his last match as a senior. He served as Team Captain his last two years. He also played football for four years. In i950 he received the Howard Hill Mossman Cup as a member of the senior class who had brought the greatest honor in athletics to Amherst College. While attending Law School at Yale University he coached the Freshmen Wrestling team for two years. He has followed wrestling watching local teams, the University of Minnesota and Olympic Wrestling. However,, as reported Richard Erickson says, "If we devoted as much attention to public figures as we do sports stars, there would be a collector's card for Chief Justice A.M. "Sandy" Keith, who may be the only person to have served at the top levels of all three branches of state government." In 1958 Keith was elected to the state senate; four years and an election later, be moved to the executive wing to serve as lieutenant governor under Karl Rolvaag. He also ran for governor, challenging Rolvaag for the DFL party in 1966. He later founded the law firm of Dunlap, Keith, Finseth,, Berndt and Sandberg. In 1989 he was appointed Associate Justice of the Minnesota Court by Governor Rudy Perpich. He took the helm of the court in 1990. Chief Justice Keith stepped down in 1998, just preceding mandatory retirement at age 70. He is the Minnesota's Chapter Inductee for Outstanding American to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Outstanding on the wrestling mat, in the court and in the public forum. A.M. "Sandy" Keith makes the State of Minnesota and its wrestling community extremely proud.
