Paul Krueger

A great innovator, coach and leader was the late Paul "Krug" Krueger of St. James. Paul, his wife Connie, and Bill and Sue Monhr were the founders of The Guillotine wrestling newspaper, which has become the, leading source of information of wrestling in Minnesota. He also played an instrumental role in the implementation of the current dual meet format used in Section and State Team competition. In addition, he was a great coach and athletic director. Krueger was a 1953 graduate of Albert Lea High School and 1957 graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. He taught social studies and served as head wrestling coach at Truman High School from 1957 to 1963. He went on to hold those same positions at St. James High School from 1963 to 1975. He guided the small school St. James to a State Wrestling Championship in 1972 in the old "one class' system, a feat unprecedented during that era. He was named Minnesota "Coach of the Year" for his efforts. In 1972 he was inducted into the' Dave Bartelma Minnesota Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was also a 1988 recipient of the National Federation of Athletic Director's Distinguished Service Award. Krueger was involved in the MWCA and Minnesota Athletic Directors Association. He was also 1985 recipient of the Sertoman's Service to Mankind Award. He served four years as Watonwan County Representative on the Governor's Crime Commission. Even with all his accomplishments "Krug" will best be remembered to the Wrestling Community of Minnesota for his great contribution to the publicity and promotion of amateur wrestling in Minnesota as one of the first publishers of The Guillotine wrestling newspaper (1971 to 1975). It played an instrumental role in the growth of the sport of wrestling at a crucial time in it's development. Paul Krueger did many things with his life and achieved far beyond the norm. St James newspaper reporter, Bill Nordgren, summed it up best in writing about Krug's death in 1994 when he said, "There aren't many things "Krug" didn't do. When one looks back on his list of achievements, one might say that "small Paul did it all."
