Duane Goldman
Duane Goldman was a four-time Big Ten champion and four-time NCAA finalist at the University of Iowa, winning the 190-pound NCAA title in 1986.
His overall record of 132-10 ranks 10th on the all-time Hawkeye career win percentage.
A two-time state champion in Colorado, Goldman was an assistant coach under Joe McFarland at Indiana University before being named the head coach in 1992. His 2005 Hoosier team placed ninth in the NCAA race, his highest finish as head coach.
There is little doubt that Goldman is one of the finest Colorado wrestlers ever.
For 43 years he has been involved in the sport, the last 24 as head wrestling coach at Indiana University.
During his high school career at Cheyenne Mountain High School, he had an 85-2 record, winning state championships as a sophomore and a senior and placing second as a junior. In addition, he won state titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman all three years, compiling an overall record of 217-12.
Upon graduation in 1981, he accepted an offer to wrestle at the University of Iowa. While with the Hawkeyes he amassed a 132-10 record and helped the Hawkeyes win four NCAA team titles. Goldman was a two-time Midlands champion and earned Outstanding Wrestler honors. He won four Big Ten titles and was a four-time NCAA finalist and four-time All-American. In 1986, as a senior captain, Goldman won the NCAA championship at 190 pounds. He is one of only 10 wrestlers to be a four-time Big Ten champion and one of only 11 wrestlers to reach the NCAA Division I finals four times.
Named Iowa's Outstanding Wrestler as a senior, Goldman continued to compete for the Hawkeye Wrestling Club and the USA National team. He was a two-time Canadian Cup champion and placed fifth at the Tbilisi tournament, considered the toughest tournament in the world at the time. Goldman was a member of the USA National team from 1986-88, winning gold at the 1987 Pan American Games, competing in the 1987 World Cup and being an alternate for the 1988 Olympics. He also coached and competed for the Martigny Club de Lutte in Switzerland.
Goldman was hired as an assistant coach at the United States Military Academy in 1989 and became an assistant coach at Indiana University the following year. He was hired as head coach at IU in 1992 and became the winningest coach in school history with 277 victories. He has qualified at least one wrestler for the NCAA Division I Championships a school record 24 times. Goldman coached 108 NCAA qualifiers, four Big Ten champions, 28 All-Americans and three NCAA champions.
He has been head coach of the United States' Cadet World Team and Junior World team.
Goldman's student athletes have excelled in the classroom, earning 22 individual Academic All-America awards and eight Team Academic All-America awards.
He is a member of the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa, the Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame and the Colorado Springs Sports Hall of Fame.
Duane and his wife of 28 years, Patricia, have three children; Aphten (25), Garret (23) and Avery (20).
