Bobby Stover
March 01, 1937 - May 26, 2025
Coach Bob Stover graduated from Clay County High School in 1955.
He earned his bachelor of arts degree from Morris Harvey College in 1964 and his master's degree from West Virginia University. Stover also studied at Marshall University and was a member of the baseball and wrestling teams.
Stover initiated the wrestling program at his alma mater in 1967. The team's first mats were four-foot by 6-foot gym mats tied together and their uniforms were gray sweatsuits. There were no divisions at the time, so Clay County competed against the bigger schools as well as the smaller ones.
Stover coached eight individual state champions and 11 state runners-up while leading his team to six regional titles, six New River Valley Conference titles and 299 dual meet wins. He was the AA State Wrestling Coach of the Year and the West Virginia High School Wrestling Coach of the Year by the West Virginia Coaches Association in 1980. Stover earned the Regional Coach of the Year award in 1988.
He retired from coaching in 1989 after devoting 25 years to wrestling.
Because of his dedication to wrestling, the Bob Stover Classic wrestling tournament is now an annual event for Clay County High School.
The National Wresting Hall of Fame is honored to present Bob Stover with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award.
