Kenneth B. Whitley Ken Whitley is an icon in Virginia wrestling as both a wrestler and as a coach. Whitley was a two-time AAA State Heavyweight Champion at Norview High School in Norfolk, Virginia"”a feat that was not duplicated for 30 years. Whitley received his BS degree in Health & Physical Education from Virginia Teach in 1968 and his MS degree in Supervision from George Washington University in 1984. After his graduation from Virginia Tech in 1968, Kenny returned to coach at Norview High School. While there his teams won seven district, two regional and an AAA team championship. Whitley wrestled for Virginia Tech and qualified for the NCAA Championship. He was voted Outstanding Wrestler in the state by the Roanoke News. Kenny was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame. Other awards include Norfolk Sports Club, Scholastic Coach of the Year, Virginian Pilot 70's Decade Coach of the year, two time VHSL Coach of the Year and one of the eight finalists for the USA Coach of the Year in 1989. Over his career, Whitley coached his teams to over 400 victories as head wrestling coach at Norview, Lake Taylor, Princess Anne and Granby High Schools. His wrestlers have distinguished themselves at all levels by winning and placing in the AAA State Championships and in the NCAA National Tournaments. Two of his former wrestlers were inducted into their colleges Hall of Fame"”Mike McCarthy at Old Dominion University and Bill Hill at East Carolina University. A number of his former wrestlers have gone on to be successful high school coaches.
