Mertz Mortorelli had a thirty-one year tenure with UWS as a coach and athletic director. He had (37) NAIA All- Americans with (5) Wisconsin Conference Championship Teams from 1960 through 1969. He had (51) Individual Conference Champions in the Wisconsin Conference Tournament, (15) State to Champions in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Championships and (10) runner-ups, almost all in the 1960's era. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Wrestling Hall of Fame and named "man of the year" in 1974 by the Amateur Wrestling News. He was also inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1974 in Kansas City. He was given (Honor Mertz Mortorelli Day in Wisconsin) by former Governor Tommy Thompson who had vast knowledge of Mortorelli's accomplishments in wrestling. He was voted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, took a National All-American Team to the Olympic village in Athens, Greece in 1985 and had previously taken an All-American team to Korea and Japan and was given the name "Mr. Wrestling"! He was responsible for bringing the USA WORLD WRESTLING TEAM to UWS Gates Field House to practice and then complete in the finals that decided who would represent the USA team at the World Wrestling Championships. That USA World Wrestling team included silver medal winners at previous Olympics. Mortorelli was asked to hold the 1970 NAIA National Wrestling Championships at UWS as the tournament director member of the U.S. Olympic Wrestling Committee for 12 years. Throughout his life, Mertz befriended many people, athletes and students. When Arnold Schwarzenegger came to school at UWS he would work out at the weight room in Gates Gym. He got to know Mertz and his accomplishments with wrestling and football and gained knowledge and respect for Mertz at a very young age.
