DeWaine Silker

A two-time state qualifier for Rochester High School, DeWaine also wrestled at Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). DeWaine learned wrestling at ISTC with the likes of Olympians Bill Nelson, Bill Knoll, Bill Smith as well as Keith Young, Bill Weick, and others. DeWaine started coaching in Morris, Minnesota serving as head coach in 1951-52. He moved to Rochester and served as assistant coach from 1952-57, taking over as head coach in 1957-58. As a wrestling official, DeWaine was active in stripes from 1947 through 1979. He served as the Minnesota State High School League Wrestling Rules Interpreter from 1977-89. He was also the District Tournament Director from 1971-92 and the Minnesota Region 1 Tournament Director from 1971-92. He has served wrestling in many ways and even though retired, he still serves by helping with fundraising for the John R. Philo Wrestling Scholarship fund with over $100,000 to date. DeWaine has frequently been heard saying "All that I am, and all that I have become, I owe to wrestling"!
