Jim Short
Minnesota Wrestling ranks amongst the best in the country and Jim Short is certainly one of the reasons why. He is a seemingly tireless director and coach, both during the winter high school season and Minnesota USA Wrestling in spring and summer. Jim has served on the Minnesota USA Board of Directors since 1984 and was Vice President from 1995 - 2000. He has also served on the 9th Grade and Under League Board of Directors since its inception in 1992 as well as serving as its Director. As a high school coach, Jim's Simley teams were the talk of the late 1980's and early 1990's winning state team titles in 1987, 1988, 1989, and 1992. His teams captured runners-up finishes in 1991, 1994, and 1995. Among the 16 individual state champions Jim coached, seven titles were won by his own sons John, Chris, Willy, and Wade. Jim was twice named Minnesota "Coach of the Year" in 1987 and 1998. He also coached the USA vs Cuba dual meet in 1992. He was Minnesota USA Wrestling "Man of the Year" in 1990. He has also been in ducted in the Dave Bartelma (Minnesota) Wrestling Hall of Fame. As a wrestler, Jim was a state runner-un in 1965. He retired from coaching in 1995, passing the reigns over to his son, Will, a former All-American at the University of Minnesota. Jim currently serves as Activities Director at Simley High School. His success as a coach will always be available in the record books, but his improvements to wrestling in Minnesota will play out on the mats for years to come!
