William Anderson
While growing up in Baltimore Bill Anderson Learned early in this life those qualities that would help him to be successful in many ways. First as a high school and college athlete, then as a very successful coach, and more importantly as a caring and loving husband and father.
After graduating from high school, Bill entered what was then Western Maryland College and is now McDaniel College. During his freshman year, Bill won his weight class Championship and was subsequently asked to coach the team for the remaining three years. This experience prepared him for his future as a successful high school wrestling coach.
Bill’s first four years were spent at Baltimore Southern High School as the assistant varsity and junior varsity coach as well as a Physical Education Teacher. His Southern H.S. team were the Maryland Scholastic Team Champions. This was the only high school wrestling tournament in the state at this time.
In 1954, Bill accepted the position of Teacher and Varsity Wrestling coach at the new Merganthaler Vocational/Technical High School. Within two years, 1956 the Merganthaler wrestling team won the Lehigh Cup Symbolic of the Maryland Scholastic Association’s Team Championship. During the eleven years as Head Coach at Merganthaler, Bill produced eleven Maryland Scholastic individual Champions. Some of these your men went on to successful carriers in college.
Coach Anderson was also one of the Founding Fathers of the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association.
