CORALVILLE, Iowa – It was a breakthrough performance for Team USA’s Cohlton Schultz, who was the Colorado and National winner of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame's Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award in 2019, on Thursday evening at Xtream Arena. The four-time Senior World Team member outlasted Cuban great Oscar Pino Hinds on criteria in the final day one bout at the 2026 Senior Pan American Championships.

The 130 kg final ended 1-1, with Schultz holding the criteria advantage. Schultz, a four-time Senior World Team member, scored the first point from passivity after a minute of pummeling in period one. Pino Hinds, a four-time Senior World medalist, did the same in period two. Both men came close to posting a score from top but couldn’t find home. Schultz earned criteria by scoring the first point in the 1-1 contest.

Also taking out a tough Cuban in the gold medal round was 87 kg champion Beka Melelashvili, who earned an 8-6 decision over 2024 Olympian and defending champion Daniel Gregorich Hechavarria. Melelashvili defeated Gregorich Hechavarria twice on the day—a 1-1 decision in pool play before the higher-paced final. Both men are past U23 World medalists and Senior World Team members for their respective nations.

Earning style points with mammoth-sized throws in the championship finals were Kamal Bey at 82 kg and Joel Adams at 77 kg. In his only match of the day, Bey solidified a 9-1 technical fall against Mexico’s Diego Macias Torres courtesy of a body lock toss. Similarly, Adams exploded from the top position with consecutive four- and five-point lifts in a 10-1 win over Oscar Barrios Rochez of Honduras.

Rounding out the list of U.S. champions were Max Nowry at 55 kg and Landon Drury at 63 kg. Both men ran through round robin brackets unscathed to claim gold.

Two-time age-group World medalist Otto Black put forth a valiant effort against Cuba’s Olympic champion Luis Orta Sanchez in the 67 kg finals. Down 4-0 in the second period, Black earned top position and converted a gutwrench to tighten the match to 4-3. He gave up a step out in the waning moments while increasing his output in search of the winning score.

Two-time World Team member Dalton Roberts was the lone American to miss the podium on day one in Coralville. He dropped his opener to Yerony Liria Carreras of Dominican Republic 3-1 and was not pulled into repechage.
