Dan Gable Museum Celebrates Wrestling in the Olympics
WATERLOO, Iowa - The National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum is excited to announce that it will “Celebrate Wrestling in the Olympics” throughout July and August. The museum will spotlight the remarkable achievements of Olympians, honoring their contributions to the sport of wrestling and their enduring legacy.
Children will be able to learn about wrestling and receive a prize by completing the “Flag Find,” where they find answers to trivia questions by searching the museum for exhibits displaying American flags.
Named for wrestling legend Dan Gable and located in a refurbished downtown section of his hometown, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum has become a landmark in Waterloo, Iowa and a world-class destination for wrestlers and fans.
"Part of our mission at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is to preserve our history, and the Olympic Games play a huge role in that every four years," said Jim Miller, Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. "Come join us for a scavenger hunt, have some fun, and learn about our great Olympians of the past."
Thirty-two individuals honored in the Dan Gable Museum have combined for 16 Olympic gold medals, 11 Olympic silver medals and nine Olympic bronze medals. Twenty inductees of the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa have combined to win 21 Olympic medals, including 12 gold medals by Ed Banach, Lou Banach, Glen Brand, Tom Brands, Dan Gable, Kevin Jackson, Randy Lewis, Allie Morrison, Terry McCann, Ben Peterson, Cael Sanderson and Bill Smith. Nine members of the Alan and Gloria Rice Greco-Roman Hall of Champions have combined to win 11 medals, including three gold medals from Jeff Blatnick, Steve Fraser and Rulon Gardner. Four inductees of the George Tragos / Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame have combined to win four Olympic medals, including a gold medal by Kurt Angle.
The museum proudly displays World Championship gold medals won by Terry Brands in 1993 and 1995 and a silver medal and a bronze medal won by Dave Schultz in 1985 and 1986, respectively.
Boasting a large collection of Olympic wrestling uniforms and memorabilia, the museum displays singlets from Olympic gold medalists Tom Brands, Jordan Burroughs, Dan Gable, Steve Fraser, and Gable Steveson; Olympic silver medalists Adeline Gray and Dennis Hall; and Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun. It also proudly displays Olympic uniforms from Olympic gold medalists Ed Banach, Lou Banach, Steve Fraser, Dan Gable and Dave Schultz.
