Terry Beckstead

Western Washington Wrestling Officials Association, 1973 to present Newport High School 1978-1980 Terry Beckstead was a high school wrestler at Franklin Pierce High School and college wrestler for Western Washington University, where he qualified and participated in the 1971 NAIA National Wrestling Tournament. Beckstead served as an assistant wrestling coach at Newport High School in Bellevue from 1978-1980. He started his officiating career with the Western Washington Wrestling Officials Association in 1973, and currently continues to officiate youth, middle school and high school wrestling. A lifelong educator, Beckstead retired after serving as an administrator for the Sumner School District. As a leader in the wrestling officiating ranks, Terry has been a member of the Western Washington Wrestling Officials Association for 40 years, where he has served as an Executive Board officer for 30 consecutive years. Since 2008, Beckstead has served as the wrestling representative on the Washington Officials Association Executive Board. Terry has officiated over 30 state high school tournaments and over 37 Regional qualifying tournaments during his career. Beckstead believes in giving back to the sport of wrestling through his role as head of training/mentoring of new officials with his local association. He continues to challenge all officials to constantly improve and was one of the first officials to step-up and officiate girls tournaments emphasizing the importance to call the girls matches with the same level of competence and enthusiasm as the boys matches. His work ethic, moral character and outstanding citizenship embodies the Washington Officials Association Code of Ethics. For his contributions to wrestling officiating, Terry Beckstead has been recognized as the Tacoma/Pierce County Official of the Year in 1983; the WWWOA Inspirational Award (2006); WWWOA Presidents Award (2007); the WWWOA Association Service Award (2009); and the Tacoma /Pierce County Excellence in Officiating Award (2009). Terry has also been awarded the Washington Officials Association Meritorious Service Award and was inducted into the Washington Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2011. Terry and his wife Marilyn currently reside in Puyallup. They have two daughters, Kelli and Heidi and have three grandchildren, Carter, Cole and Reese.
