Steven Ward

Steve Ward's wrestling community colleagues know him as the coach of one of the most outstanding wrestling programs in Massachusetts.

While renowned as a "complete gentleman," beneath Steve's calm exterior is a fiery competitor who demands the absolute best of his kids. His kids also reflect the team loyalty, courage and sportsmanship he stresses.

The results speak for themselves; Steve's Roxbury Latin teams have racked up 357 wins against 57 losses and one tie. During one twelve-year stretch, Roxbury Latin was 132-7-1, a .942 winning percentage! Throughout his career, Steve has hosted tournaments, been president of the Private School Wrestling Association, run the Private School New England Championships, trained numerous assistants, and always traveled the extra mile to promote our beloved sport.

A graduate of Amherst College, Steve taught and coached at Avon Old Farms for four years before coming, in 1976, to Roxbury Latin, where he has been a stellar contributor. Steve is an outstanding history teacher who also served as dean for many years, as well as a true "school man," coaching two sports in addition to wrestling.

Steve's motivation springs from his concern for helping kids during their formative years. His former wrestlers and students fondly remember him as a great teacher who always made time to give extra help or wise counsel. He and his wife Pat have "been there" for countless wrestlers and teams, giving extra help, meals, and even lodging when needed.

Steve and Pat live just a few blocks from Roxbury Latin, where they continue to give of themselves, Steve in his familiar role and Pat as a psychologist.
