Wayne Schutte

Wayne Schutte graduated from Othello High School in 1968 where he was coached by Von Buck, Sam Martin and Bill Bennett. He attended Central Washington University and was coached by Hall of Fame coach Eric Beardsley. At CWU, Wayne was the 1969 Evergreen Conference Champion and in 1972 was the runner-up. Prior to his retirement from coaching wrestling in 1995, he spent 21 years as head coach at Othello High School. His teams accumulated over 250 wins. His teams have placed in the top 10 at state 121 times including 2nd on 5 occasions and 3rd and 4th once each. He has coached 24 state finalists including 15 champions and a total of 58 state place winners. In addition, Wayne was three time head coach/team leader of the Washington State Junior National Teams, Zone 8 head coach for the Washington Centennial Games, and was the Coaches Regional Representative for the 2A Region 4. Wayne was honored by his peers by being selected as League Coach of the Year six times, Regional Coach of the Year four times, and Washington State Coach of the Year twice. In 1995, he was selected as Washington State Coach of the Year for all Classifications. Wayne was also selected as league Coach of the year in two other sports, softball and golf. Outside of wrestling, Wayne was selected as the 1994 Othello High School Teacher of the Year and he received the Yakima Valley Interscholastic Activities Association Distinguished Service Wared in 2004. Wayne was inducted into the Washington State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995.
