Mick Torres
Mick Torres has devoted more than five decades to the sport of wrestling in Illinois, serving the wrestling community as a competitor, coach, official, administrator, announcer, tournament director and technology leader. While his accomplishments on the mat and in education are impressive, it is his lifetime of service behind the scenes that has left a lasting impact on generations of wrestlers, coaches and fans throughout the state.
Since 1975, Mick has been a constant presence in Illinois wrestling. Beginning in 1994, alongside his brother Dave Torres, wife Lisa Torres, and the dedicated ILWrestle.com team, Mick helped revolutionize tournament operations across northern Illinois. Over the past three decades, he has managed more than 200 wrestling tournaments, including some of the state’s most respected events such as the Al Dvorak Invitational, Berman Holiday Classic, Moore-Prettyman Invitational, Rex Whitlatch Invitational, and more than 70 IHSA Conference, Regional and Sectional tournaments. Beyond running events, Mick has freely shared his expertise by training, troubleshooting and consulting with tournament directors and the IHSA on all aspects of tournament management.
Always looking to improve the wrestling experience, Mick became an early innovator in tournament technology. In the mid-1990s, he was among the first to incorporate digital photography into tournament awards, quickly producing championship brackets featuring photos of wrestlers having their hands raised in victory — a groundbreaking concept at the time that added a personal touch to the sport.
As a competitor, Mick enjoyed a standout career at Yorkville High School, helping lead the Foxes to four consecutive top-three IHSA team finishes, including a 1976 state championship. Individually, he was a state placer three times and a 1979 state finalist, compiling a remarkable 102-15 career record. He continued wrestling at Northern Illinois University before injuries ended his collegiate career.
Mick later gave back to the sport as head wrestling coach at Lake Zurich High School, where he coached multiple state placewinners and the school’s first-ever state champion in any sport. He also served as an IHSA wrestling official and spent 37 years in education and athletic administration, always advocating for student-athletes and wrestling programs.
His leadership within the wrestling community has continued long after retirement. Mick has served on the Executive Board of the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association since 2015 and is Secretary of the Illinois Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Board of Directors. He also serves as the announcer for the IHSA Individual, Dual Team and Girls State Finals, as well as the prestigious Midlands Championships, becoming one of the most recognizable voices in Illinois wrestling.
For his dedication and lifelong commitment to the sport, Mick was inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in 2016. Through decades of service, innovation and leadership, Mick Torres has helped shape and strengthen Illinois wrestling for countless athletes, coaches and communities.
Mick and his supportive wife Lisa have four children (Amanda, Ashley, Zack and Ray) and five grandchildren (Allie, Sophie, Connor, Willow and Benjamin).
