National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum Announces Officers

STILLWATER, Okla. - The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum Board of Governors announced that it unanimously approved its officers for 2016-18 at its meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, on Oct. 24. The officers are Terry Shockley as Chairman of the Board, Steve Silver as Vice Chairman, Tom Slowey as Secretary, and Ed Gallegos as Treasurer.

The Board of Governors is responsible for preserving the history and tradition of the sport of wrestling by operation of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa. The Board is also responsible for the annual election of Distinguished Members, Outstanding American, Medal of Courage, Order of Merit, and Lifetime Service to Officials.

The Stillwater museum is currently closed while undergoing a $3.5 million renovation, scheduled to be completed in time to celebrate Honors Weekend on June 3-4, 2016. America’s shrine to the sport of wrestling, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame has the largest collection of wrestling artifacts and memorabilia in the world. The renovation will allow visitors to experience interactive exhibits while continuing to see the greatest names of the sport enshrined in the Hall of Honors.

Shockley (Madison, Wisconsin and Orlando, Florida), Silver (Forney, Texas) and Slowey (Torrance, California) were re-elected for their second two-year terms while Gallegos (Stillwater, Oklahoma) replaces Rusty Shaw (Stillwater, Oklahoma), who has been a member of the Board since 1994 and has served as Treasurer since 2000. Shockley has been a member of the Board since 2007, serving as Secretary from 2008-13, while Slowey and Silver each joined the Board in 2010.

“We want to thank Rusty Shaw for his service over the past 21 years. He has been extremely benevolent to this organization, and has been a great mentor to me and our staff. His management and philosophical style for executing the fiduciary responsibilities of our organization has helped us experience a high level of credibility with our constituents,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum. “We are sorry to see Rusty depart as treasurer, but we are confident that Ed Gallegos will be a tremendous asset who will help us continue to grow.”

“Over the past 21 years we have experienced challenging times, and yet we have been able to provide the leadership and resources necessary for the organization to continue serving its mission,” said Shaw. “I want to thank the people that I have had the privilege to work with, and it has been an honor to serve with them.”

The Board also announced that it approved Matt Hull (Stillwater, Oklahoma), and David O’Hara (Dallas, Texas) as members, beginning in 2016.

“We continue to add great talent to our Board,” said Shockley. “These individuals, like each of our Board members, not only share a great passion for the sport of wrestling, but are willing to commit their time and resources for the important work that our Board does on behalf of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum in Waterloo, Iowa.”

It was also announced that the six-year terms of David Barry (Hoboken, New Jersey), William Lam (Pittsboro, North Carolina), and Arno Niemand (Boulder, Colorado) have concluded. The trio and Shaw were unanimously approved by the Board to become Governor’s Associates, beginning in January. Governor’s Associates have the same rights and privileges as a member of the Board, but do not have the right to vote at Board meetings.

The Board is comprised of no less than 10, and not more than 30 members, who shall serve a maximum of six consecutive years in as many as three consecutive two-year terms. Three members of the Board shall represent United World Wrestling, USA Wrestling, and the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Those individuals are nominated by their organizations, and must be approved by the Board.
